Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrating The Origin Of Ganesh Chaturthi Vinayak

Every year on calm, rainy days of September, the Hindus prepare for a ten-day festival. They set up the Idols of a God who is most revered in Hinduism. They chant slokas And mantras and show their devotion to god in various different rituals. They treat their neighbors with love and sweets, and clean their houses for conducting pujas on auspicious days. This festival is revered among Hindus as the birth of the Elephant- headed god, Ganesha. Ganesha, who is also known by many names such as Vinayak, Ganapati among many other is the second son of Lord Shiva, and Goddess Parvati.

He was the brother of Lord Muruga. Lord Ganesha, was created by Goddess parvati to guard the abode while shiva, was away. When shiva returned from his journey he was stopped by Lord Ganesh, who did not know who shiva was. Enraged by such defiance,Lord shiva severed the head of his own son, Ganesh. When Parvati returned she was devastated by what had happened and informed Shiva that Lord Ganesh was their own son. Shiva promised to restore Lord Ganesh’s life and went looking for the severed head, but in vein. Unable to find his son’s head, Lord Shiva found the head of an elephant. He then attached the head of the elephant to the body of Lord Ganesh, and brought him back to life.

Thus Lord Ganesh was born. Ganesh chathurthi is celebrated for a total of ten days. Historically, the festival is being celebrated from the period of chhatrapati shivaji in the late1600s. The first day of the massive festival is called Shukla chaturthi. During this period, the Idol of Lord Ganesh is placed and various rituals are performed on it. People worship the Idol, or also known as Murti in the morning and evening by offering flowers and food delicacies. The common food delicacies offered to Lord Ganesh is Modak, which is a mixture of jaggery and coconut flakes filled in rice flour dumplings.  The worship of the day is completed for the day when the devotees sing aarti iin praise of Lord Ganesh.

This is repeated till the last day of the festival, and on the last day the murti, or the idol is taken ceremoniously to a lake, or any water body for immersion.
