Durga puja: the celebration of devotion

Durga puja is one of the most respected and celebrated festivals among Hindus all throughout the world. It is a festival of Devotion, and a celebration of the triumphant victory of good over evil. The History, states that Durga puja originated in Bengal in the late 1500s and it was said to be celebrated by the upper community of Dinajpur in Bengal. The first Durga Puja was conducted by the Zamindars or the landlords of dinajpur in the name of “Baro-Yaari” or the “Twelve –pal” puja. The Baro-yaari puja was only famous in rural parts of Bengal, before it was introduced to Kolkata by Raja Harinath of Cossimbazar.

The puja, is celebrated for a total of ten days. The first day is called “Mahalaya” and it is the day when the initiation of the Idol is done. The Hindus believe that goddess Durga, should be invoked into the idol through a ritual called “pran pratisthan” before performing the puja, On this day,the people remember their loved ones who have passed away. The next day of utmost significance is the sixth day, which is called shashthi. This is the day where the goddess is welcomed into the community and the celebrations begin. The next three days are called saptami, ashtami and navami respectively. During these three days, the deity is revered and various religious rituals are performed on the Goddess. These three days mark the main puja where the goddess is worshipped and it is considered by the Hindu community as the most sacred three days of Durga puja.

Although, the first Durga puja was conducted in the late 1500s, it became a community puja which was conducted by and for the public in the year 1910. Sanatan Dharmotsahini sabha, organized the puja with full public participation in Baghbazar, Kolkata. This went on to become the public version of Durga puja, which is celebrated even today.
